Microsoft Gets Boost in Sales to China's Lenovo as Piracy Ebbs - Bloomberg
By Mo Ming :: 2006-04-17
From Bloomberg News
Lenovo Group Ltd., China's largest personal computer maker, is selling more machines with Windows XP software, suggesting progress in Microsoft Corp.'s efforts to curb piracy, Lenovo Chairman Yang Yuanqing said.
About 70 percent of Chinese buyers opt for Microsoft's Windows, the world's most popular operating system, up from 10 percent in November when Lenovo started pre-installing copies, Yang said yesterday in an interview. Lenovo will buy $1.2 billion worth of Windows in the next year, the companies said yesterday.
"It's very good to see for improving the overall environment,'' Yang said in an interview at a Bellevue, Washington, hotel. Buyers are responding to marketing that suggests that pirated software has more flaws and viruses, he said.

Review: Since Dell is against the Chinese Communist Government, then the government shouldn't buy from Dell.

Review: You know I wish I could buy a blank PC from Dell, instead of paying a Microsoft tax. Not for piracy purposes but to install Linux. Ubuntu Linux rocks on the desktop!

Review: The latest add from lenovo in malaysia--it was very cheap for a desktop. I almost wanted to buy. Luckily I read the specs. Clearly, it does not include Windows XP. No wonder it is cheap. And you know that in Asia a lot of private users do not use genuine software. I conclude that Lenovo is trying to sell cheaper hardware without Windows XP, so the end users can easily decide on the price comparison with other major brands. This is not very professional buisness antics on the part of Lenovo because a lot of Asian customers will buy harware and end up buying imitation software. This will not help to fight piracy. I think big companies should have a very professional marketing and sales protocol whch they must adhere to. To sum it up, I think a leopard can never change its spots. Typical of Lenovo -- a Chinese company that doesn't care much about piracy.

Review: Once again critics of the Dell direct model have shown they don't get it. Dell doesn't enter a market like China, or any market for that matter, initially trying to court buyers who rely on the Internet. First, we sell to the local offices of multinational corporations that are already familiar with Dell. Then to government agencies and academia. Then to mid-sized and small businesses. And then via the Internet to consumers who probably use a Dell at work. And with this proven strategy our worldwide market share increased a full percentage point last quarter.
