Review: The key here is what the radio chip manufacturers are going to do. It is all about volume (cost/chip)and they need to decide which technology and spectrum to focus on.
Look at the new 802.11n unlicensed systems, 2.5GHz WiMAX spectrum USA, 3.5GHz worldwide WiMAX, the 700MHz and new White Space 400MHz systems.
Look out for the WiFi based Mesh Networks that will eventually cover most Metro markets with true broadband pipes.

Review: It was a brilliant move by these folks to lead with the big money. What it did was force the CellCo to bring out their big money early to retain ownership and control of this market. Now the CellCo business case is at risk as they prepare to compete with the Clearwire and Sprint WiMAX Networks as well as the unlicensed Metro Area Mesh Networks that are causing all these Licensed folks fits.

Review: Very interesting and engrossing article!
Big Question still remains - How would WiMAX CPEs cost compare with the Cable/DSL ones?
