Review: Mr Negroponte's given a noble idea for the Governments of all developing nations to follow. The building of basic infrastructure and the dissemination of the latest technology and education to the massses has to go side by side. Skills have to be developed at an early age. This is the right step to provide a laptop at an affordable price. He has given a target minimum price. Let the Government and Social organizations participate in subsidising it and provide the benefits to the maximum number of students.

Review: It's commendable that Negroponte is spending time on solutions for this. I agree that a dumbed down computing device which does not really have anything special to offer that integrates with life's requirements,(does it help in planning, hygiene, increased income, education given that all it does is connect to the net)- I don't think it has content, connectivity, and ease of use attached to it. Handing over even a $400 laptop is useless unless it offers value.

Review: India is a big country with brilliant people. So why do we wait? Can't we accept first and lead this trend? I think those who object still have the slave-like mentality that the British empire created on our Indian minds. So they want to wait, wait till other countries take advantage of it. And then shamefully follow them. What a shame!

Review: OLPC is crazy (Indian context). If at all implemented, the laptop will be sold (by parents) the next instant and money used to buy food & drink. Wake up laptop is not what is needed.

Review: No one will buy a screen with 7-inch display. It must be bigger or else we must spend $200 for eyecare.

Review: Negroponte- right visionary at the right time to unleash the fountain of knowledge for dissemination around the world to empower the masses. The dissemination of knowledge has been controlled too long by too few to protect their vested interests by manipulating the socio-political systems, "untouchability", "free market" and so on. "Blessed are the poor (today's) for they shall inherit the earth" while enriching every body without discrimination. There is nothing to fear! Entrepreneurship is not the exclusive domain of the Western societies. The GACT?s (Guanine, Adenine, Cytosine, and Thiamine molecules, the predecessors of all living genes) invented the process some four billions of years ago. Not just every human being, every member of every species are endowed with millions and billions of entrepreneurial GACTs. It is time to replace our controlling philosophy by empowerment of all to be congruent with the inevitable evolutionary entrepreneurial power of all biospheric GACTs.

Review: Well, the Indian government will be forced to accept this if the OLPC gets a good number in testing countries. Until then wait and watch.

Review: While I wholeheartedly agree with Prof. Negroponte's view that using a computer and the Internet can be worldview-changing for anyone, and can be a great help to children in socialization and schoolwork, it's pretty hard to argue with those who insist that monetary aid to developing nations is better spent on basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, birth control, and hygiene. One cannot make much use of a computer or the Net when starving, lacking a home or school, clothing and/or safe drinking water, suffering from disease, or having to deal with bombs and gunfire all about, or simply a lack of room. Especially in emerging nations like China and India with severe overpopulation problems, these needs should come first.

Review: I feel for a country like India. The initiative "One Laptop per child" is a bit premature. India is a developing country. Its priority is nutritious food, clean drinking water, employment for all. "One laptop per child" will not make great strides here.
