Review: Yes!The best way to keep audience glued to your speech is by saying some startling facts.
When I speak about business principles to an audience I just ask "what is that which is common to all of you?" I get answers like "we belong to the same city or same borough" etc. I tell them the common link is that weare all in business -- make something and sell or sell some service. Get to the roots and build up.I get rapt attention always!

Review: I recently saw a presenter at an HR trade show (the president of Infolink Screening Services) who hit on most of these points. Background screening law sounds dry and boring, but his energy and expertise made the presentation very interesting and even entertaining.

Great article. However, in formal writing, you stand on a podium, not in front or behind it. A better word for podium in your article would have been "lectern."
