Review: There are so many varialbles that enter into a global logistics strategy that opportunity for problems due to forces of nature, etc., etc, are almost inevitable. In order to be on top of your game you must be proactive not reactive, the latter is too little too late. A comprehensive plan, coupled with a brainstorming " Drill Exercise" can quickly point out how ill prepared most companies are. A disaster contingency strategy must be a part of an overall annual supply chain strategy and vision. It is not just for IT anymore, the stakes are too high, the risk is high and the possibility of a significant event disrupting the global supply chain is almost inevitable, just look at the past 5 years for examples that O'Marah points out and it is growing. As AMR points out, you must have a well communicated contingency plan to be prepared.

Review: It's great to see someone writing about supply chain risk management. I'd like to see more written about potential issues like a Avian flu or how companies might be hedging against the high cost of oil and how those issues impact the supply chain.

Review: Some very compelling insights. Risk management solutions are critical in light of recent government failures that have forced companies such as Home Depot to step up in times of crisis. The statistics cited in this article are alarming, but the strategies and technologies are in place for business to deliver in the face of a catastrophe.

Review: Another company that has developed a best in class supply chain risk oversight program is Home Depot. Home Depot tracks over 30 global risk metrics and has a team that manages global risk and contingency planning. Risk metrics range from terrorism to exchange rate volatility. This has aided the company in developing a flexible supply chain.

Review: I'm surprised O'Marah failed to mention Oracle's strong risk management capabilities, which have been used by organizations such as Dow Chemicals, Alcoa, and Agilent, to name a few. After spending multiple days briefing AMR on Supply Chain Risk Management, it is disappointing to see that one of the largest players in this space doesn't even get an honorable mention. Oracle's Strategic Network Optimization product has been helping companies manage supply chain risk, since before the term Supply Chain Risk Management was coined. Those organizations looking for a robust SCRM solution would be wise to evaluate Oracle's offering.
