Review: Motorola mobile phones can only support fancy technology if the access network is optimized to support it. Since their infrastructure design is mediocre, they have to interop with Lucent/Alcatel or Nortel to support fancy applications. This will crimp their long-term growth plans if they rely entirely on terminals. Zander's dream of independent growth without consolidation will probably convince their board of directors, and no one else.

Review: I have serious doubts if Motorola has a grasp of the Indian culture, which is so essential for innovation in mobile technology. Lessons from Negroponte's $100 laptop initiative could be illuminating for Motorola. Intel's move to penetrate the Indian market with low-cost PC's, citing the current PC penetration in India at 2% is quite humorous! Does anybody have the resources for an accurate census on India?

Review: Yesterday, I read that Motorola is doubling its sales in China this quarter. Zander needs to address cost containment to get his stock up. Motorola has dragged doing this for some time and as interest rates climb and a recession looms about three years out, it is going to be a blood bath down the road when margins slip from current levels.
