Review: a culture of innovation starts with a child like curiosity to know everything, and to make it for yourself or to have someone make it for you the way you want it. Being selfish yet honest helps. balancing the customers needs, ie the marketplace also plays into it.

Review: This article was not missing the connection with the consumer/customer. Number 7 clearly says that all research is based on a close connection with the consumer. The idea that great companies are great because of their spectacular leadership flies in the face of all of the new business theories. These new theories say that companies are great because they are focused (like 3M), they hire the best people (like 3M), and they allow their employees the freedom to be innovative (like 3M)

Review: My experience having been involved in innovation for over 40 years and working with over 200 companies is it all starts with the consumer. This is missing from the seven points and is the No. 1 reason companies can't and don't successfully innovate.

Review: Bad article! It looks as if BusinessWeek is trying to justify why it ranked 3M 3rd in top innovating companies. But a poor, lame efford, indeed. The lowdown is superficial. In stead you could have simply explained the criteria why 3M was ranked 3rd -- just the methodology. Rest all is gas.

Review: Organizations that have sustained such outstanding historical track have one common theme and that is that the founders were leaders with extraordinary vision and the organizations they created have inculcated those values and vision into the next generations. In these times, the need to sustain this value system is generally compromised and forgotten in the pursuit of quick short-term gains. 3M stands as a yet another example of an organization that have been sucessful in preserving a deep rooted corporate philosophy.
