Review: Ha! San Francisco did notrealize the significance of its port - because it has no port. The main port is in Oakland, across the Bay. After the earthquake San Francisco planners completely relaxed building codes in order to rebuild, because Oakland was a much better choice to locate a major city. Those who live in San Francisco (myself included) know that the weather is colder and more unpredictable than in Oakland, and there is no good access to either the Bay or to the land beyond. Nice article -- but the rebuilding of SF was as much about greed and private financial interests as any rebuilding effort in history.

Review: San Francisco also realized the significance of its port and New Orleans must as well. If the gambling mecca and the Superdome are neglected in favor of the ports and levees so be it. Our heritage and culture will always bring the tourists. We must not welcome any industry that does not contribute to the creation of prosperity and opportunity for local citizens.
