Review: I sense a government effort to "dilute" Bell Labs and some of the controversies behind its technologies.

Review: The great management team of Riverstone will carry the day for Lucent- fighting off the French invasion. He who knows his enemies will win the war.

Review: As a retiree from Alcatel USA, Norm may have something to worry about. Alcatel has certainly not been kind to the employees of other companies it has purchased. The French do not always live up to the agreements they put in writing. Especially as far as employees are concerned.

Review: As a Lucent shareholder and retiree from AT&T Bell Labs (before Lucent was formed), I'm disappointed that Lucent's management concealed this deal from us at the recent shareholder meeting. I think the majority would have opposed it then, and there's a distinct possibility they still will do so. Everybody mentions the huge size of the merged companies -- but the personnel disparities are the biggest problem. We can only hope for best if this plan is shoved through.

Review: The legendary Bell Labs continues to get decimated. Will the merger close the chapter? Here in Silicon Valley, they believe it is the bed of innovation. They confuse product innovation with fundamental innovation. No other company will be able to create the Bell Labs environment, period.

Review: If Alcatel, a French enterprise, can be allowed to take over Lucent, then why are the Europeans so jittery about Mittal Steel's takeover bid of Arcelor, a European company? The sad truth is that Europeans haven't truely embraced the essence of globalization and the concept of a 'Global Society.' Protectionism is fine to an extent, but make sure that your (European) economies don't fall behind in this 'globalization' race!

Review: Is it a good deal? Yeah, at least it sounds like it. But the truth is that both Lucent and Alcatel have efficiency problems. Will the merger help improve the efficiency of the new company? It's really hard to say.

Review: As a retiree of Lucent, I hope I was not sold down the river by our ex-employer. Those of us who have pensions and a semblance of health-care plans are deeply worried about this deal.

Review: I thoroughly agree with your last paragraph. Our youngsters should be celebrating the Alcatel-Lucent merger. But they won't as they are educated by a Soviet-style education system to be imbued with capitalism and corporation hatred. How stupid! One can hardly understand how France was able to economically survive until now. They will have to wake up when Chinese and Indian invade France by being entrepreneurs and daring why we sleep behind our "psychological Berlin Wall!"
