Review: Interesting how the author of an article about scientific achievements just has to toss in U.S. propaganda. China's focus is growth and creativity - not the competitive hell that is destroying U.S. firms. Corporate corruption in the U.S. sees drug companies in direct control of the government. Fortunately that's not so endemic in China and although they may be experimental, at least potential advances are being allowed to see the light of day rather than being suppressed by major drug firms. Stem cell research - if not used - remains only research. The con the U.S. government is using on its people by the propaganda that "public funding" is banned - and thus affordable when approved, in favor of allowing big drug companies to do research so they can sell the treatment at exorbitant prices, only serves to improve the medical treatment available in other countries - thanks. Kudos to Beike Biotech and the China Government for looking toward the future rather than wallowing in the past.

Review: How effectively can China's universities and research centers operate is a key to consummate innovation economy. The government has concentrated most its resources on the best labs and universities where people assume important breakthroughs can be achieved. But the outcome is usually quite disappointing. Why? Because its system lacks the vigor to cultivate world-class engineers, to inspire researchers' participation to use their intelligence. What they are most concerned with is how to replace foreign goods without doing away with some rules and regulations that don't adapt to the development of innovation. Take IT as an example. The number of the students who major in electrical engineering and computer science is far more than that in the U.S and Japan. However, China isn't able to make its own advanced chips.

Review: Mark - all good points. I think the Chinese government is doing what has been done by Japanese, South Korean, and Taiwanese governments. To "jump start" the process so that Chinese companies will start moving up the value chain. BeijingMan - that's an unusual use of the expression "3-legged cat." Is it Finnish? In Chinese, "3-legged cat kungfu" means something easy or simple.

Review: Good for China. However, if they wish to be more science orientated they need to rely on their own education system instead of the U.S. The Chinese government has to put more emphasis on learning science at their universites as well as make Chinese universities the best in the world.

Review: 4. It is good to ask the right people to the right thing in the right time. It is the right time and the right thing. The key issue is finding the right people to do it.

Review: 3. It is logic that China government can see this, promote it as a major country strategy and providing funding for this. I think it is also a strategy to support the continued development policy. I believe it can be the ?post open policy? era which guides China to a new developing decade. There is one issue must be careful, the efficient. China has the experience that some government officers and bad foreigners take advantages of government?s policy and make private interests from the government? s funding, the corruption. And China also should keep an eye on some fake overseas innovation expert/ scientist/ high tech/ organization / company which will lead much more loss of the limited budget because the cost of some huge projects are extremely high.

Review: 2. China companies have to find a more profitable business model in order to achieve the sustainable competitive advantages when facing the global competition. There is no way out continue on this mass manufacture based development model, the margin is getting closer to the limitation. Start with the top domestic companies then the middle class companies, Chinese manufactures must find a new and more profitable business model to get over the e profit bottle-neck. The innovation is the fast track to get to this, especially the industrial design.

Review: 1. There must be much more innovations involved?Ccomparing with same situation of Taiwan and South Korea in their own economy development history, which is moving from the low margin manufacturing center to the higher margin level. The OEM factories in China are playing a very key role in the world business, but the workers on the assembling line only can get an extremely low salary. That simply because the almost no innovation is been inputting. The competition is based on price and purely.
