Review: We at Whitewater Mobile (www.whitewatermobile.com) are monitoring this space very keenly and are very excited at the prospects for growth. We have a mobile Web service (nextblast.com) that allows bloggers to mobilize their blogs with only a few clicks on a Web site. The service is currently free but we're looking at monetizing it via ad-generated revenue.

Review: It is great to finally see the validation of the mobile market space in the U.S. There are a lot of reasons why mobile marketing has enjoyed success internationally, such as free to consumer SMS, homonymous networks, population density, higher cost for voice and lower PC penetration among others. The U.S. mobile market has been more difficult to penetrate, but with the right blend of personalized SMS alerts and richer media content through use of WAP, and other handset applications, companies can expect great ROI from the mobile market.

Review: I run an interactive agency, and we've looked at mobile closely for several clients focused on younger consumers. The McDonalds example is instructive--big consumer brands can afford to pay the set up and operating charges to gamble on a big return. But it's hard to justify a $150,000 mobile pilot program when the ROI is so far off the scale of return from opt-in e-mail newsletters, viral campaigns, targeted offline-to-Web promotions. But I think when the "smart phones," which can receive video, reach 30% of the cell phone market this will become a huge channel for entertainment, and along with that "sponsored content" (a euphimism for "advertising"). Review: It's heartening to see articles that depict the many benefits of mobile marketing. It's even better that mainstream advertisers are joining the fray. I share the concern, however, that excessive SMS messaging will anger consumers and, as a result, hinder the advancement of the industry as a valuable marketing resource. Key to success in the game will be creating 100% opt-in relationships with the consumer. Isn't it about time to focus on products that drive actual sales? I sure think so.

Review: Give consumers control so SMS can grow. Leave phone companies out of the profit motive. Look how SMS has grown in the other parts of the world other than the USA.
