Review: This article was helpful, but I am curious as to what countries are worth seeking patents in? If our product has international appeal and is already selling well in 10 countries, should we consider getting patents in all 10 of those countries or focus only on the larger markets like the US?

Review: This is a really good essay to express some precautions of patent application. No matter how much effort goes into it, intellectual property should be protected in a proper way. To be a smart inventor, I believe that good planning is necessary to make sure everything goes smoothly within time constraint and all advices mentioned in the essay are starting points for the beginners.

Review: Another factor to be considered is the length of protection available on patenting your invention. If the commerical viability is not evaluated and made use of adequately to rush a patent would not be really rewarding.

Review: Be careful about relying on the one year. You could lose protection outside of the USA! If you disclose your idea before filing even a U.S. provisional application -- even if you file an application within one year of the disclosure -- you will lose the chance to get patent protection outside of the United States! For software ths may be a reasonable approach (it is generally hard to get patent protection on pure software outside of the USA anyhow), but for other inventions you could really cripple your patent by limiting to the USA only.

Review: I applied for a patent in order to license it to a major corporation. If I had to do it again I'd focus on just getting it to market. The patent process is painful!
