Review: Excellent article with very sage advice. If you are looking to ensure that a retreat is a good investment, I can recommend an outstanding resource, Retreats That Work. It's available on amazon.com and is well worth the investment.

Review: Good advice. Deal with the tough issues, shape an agenda and attendance that gets views beyond the conventional wisdom or the company line, don't be afraid of some conflict and energy, and get a facilitator to help prepare, to keep the discussion on track and to get closure. If you want warm and fuzzy, try church camp. This is business.

Review: I have been promoting the theory that too many managers spend their time in retreats rather than advances for some time. The problem is that consensus management can be an excuse for poor leadership. For consensus to work the organization must have a clear vision of the organization's mission so that their consensus decisions actually drive the advance and not aid and abet the retreat.

Review: I really liked this article. If more companies do what you are suggesting, it will really work wonders. I am going to do more of what you have suggested.
