Review: I'm going to China to work as an english teacher but am giving it a month to initially see how bad the internet censoship is and whether I could put up with it. I certainly don't want my emails spied on and my favorite sites blocked. Iv'e heard a lot of bad things about China so can anyone tell me is this true?If it is, I will avoid it like the plague, thanks

Review: I'm sure that internet is being censored in China. With the help of Cisco and Microsoft, the Chinese authority installed world's most sophisticated firewall, nicknamed Great Firewall. (Both companies would be criticized by US Congress.) Google China was forced to filter many sensitive words in its search engine. Even Wikipedia and its Chinese version are being censored from time to time. :-(
In addition, Chinese authority has established net police. To avoid trouble, I seldom show up at Chinese BBS because my friend was once caught. I mostly read/write in English because Chinese net police are mostly illiterate in English. Interestingly, some college students are hired, to post pro-government articles or attack anti-government articles (50 cents each) on major Chinese BBS, which is an open secret now. :-)

Review: The chinese government should be destroyed. I hope that a rebelion comes soon. Censorship itself is a cime against humanity. Censorship to the extent that it is in china should never be tolerated. All governments will always be weaker than their people. When people are better informed corrupt gov. must fall.

Review: Yes. I agree. You can talk bad about America, and the government will do nothing about it. However, the fact that China takes such incredible measures to limit the idea of freedom goes to show that in itself something has to be wrong. Why would they need the filter if their form of government was legit?

Review: The Patriot Act makes us no different than China. Say the wrong thing--in public, in the press, online--and the Patriot Act gives the US government to hold you indefinately without due process; in essence you can be "disappeared." Nothing in the government's charges has to be proved, they simply have to say they believe you are a terrorist. Each of us is only as free as the least free amoung us.
I think Martin Niemöller says it best:
"In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me ?
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

Review: I studied the My Lai massacre in my high school textbook in public school in California. Do some research before you make blanket statements about the U.S. education system.
