Review: Daniel is right about the two managment styles between the two companies. EMC's conservative East Coast hierachical "Irish" favoritism has bled the company of any talent and what's left behind is a pool of sheep and a retirement home for executives/contractors of company favorites. Anyone with any talent will steer clear of this.

Review: I worked for NetApp for five years before retiring. Over the years, I worked at a number of companies in the valley and NetApp was, by far, the best. Everyone knew where we were going and was highly motivated to get there. You could talk to all of the senior management without feeling like a dope. The company culture demanded that you step up and get involved from day one.
Dan and Tom Mendoza, Dave Hitz and James Lau created a company that was great and fun to work for.
On top of that, the products were great and just worked. I had a customer tell me that NetApp systems were hard to work on. I asked way and he said, "Because your equipment has so few problems we don't spend much time with it. When we do need to do something, no one can remember the commands so we have to get the manuals out." Most companies pray for complaints like that.

Review: We purchase Network Appliance gear and while it is engineered wonderfully the sales force is the worst I have ever experienced.

Review: Worked at NetApp for seven years and this man is a true leader. High ethics, very smart, and easy to talk to. Senior management team at NetApp is top notch and committed. This company is going places. Great article.

Review: Great article and correspondence. EMC and Network Appliance truly have different management styles and product portfolios. However what EMC has done better is diversification, making it able to better deal with market shifts. EMC is the winner in my book.

Review: Sounds like a "good to great" type of CEO.

Review: I was in the storage business for 30 years (Control Data, Seagate, Micropolis). Network Appliance is one of the best at what they do and after reading the interview with the CEO I know why. It's not just about products -- it's about people and Warmenhoven does a great job with people.
