Review: I always go to our local Home Depot. The service is terific and the people are very knowlegeable. Most employees there are from the construction trades, so they need little training and they can fix anything. I actually had one employee tell me not to buy one product because it was not up to standard and told me to purchace a better brand which Home Depot didn't carry. In the end his advice was right on and saved me a lot of money. After reading some of the comments above I can't understand why there seems to be so many poor experiences.

Review: Great article.
Small is beautifull. For sure small hardware stores give superior service over the large box stores. Personal service and good advice also have a value of their own.

Review: Two years ago, I had a very bad experience from a Home Depot employee who was actually in charge of the customer service desk. From that time onwards, I have never been to Home Depont.

Review: I make every effort to shop at our Ace Hardware in Sierra Vista, AZ, over Home Depot and soon Lowe's. The people at Ace go out of their way to help you with whatever project you have, whereas the people at Home Depot either ignore you or are downright rude. Most are part-time and training is non-existent, especially when it comes to the basics, from running a cash register to handling an order. Most items at Ace are equal in price or just a dollar or two more, which is OK since their knowledge, service and outstanding attitude are priceless.

Review: I'll travel 5 miles to McGuckin Hardware in Boulder, CO, when I have a Lowe's 2 blocks away--and save time doing it because half the employees at the chains were hired too recently to have a clue where things are. In addition to running a great store, McGuckin is part of the Boulder Independent Business Alliance--one of 20 or so local chapters of the American IBA that help local businesses work together to beat the chains. Interesting group and trend.
