My comment is to Fred Tuck. Sir, are you aware that over 600,000 people work for the Postal Service? If that were to go away, that's a lot of morgage payments not get paid. Lots of cars payments missed. Are you prepared to pick up another multi-billion dallor debt as a tax payer? Not to mention the millions of folks who do not wish to conduct their business through the internet. The Postal Service needs to make some changes. That is fact. But to go away? Not any time soon. 5 day delivery would help. But also be mindful that if someone tampers with your mail, the Postal Inspectors will handle it. If someone tampers with you email, who will you call? Geek Squad!?

Repeating one of earlier comments. Just Mon-Thu delivery would be fine. Charge extra for Fri-Sat delivery.

There is nothing that appears in my mailbox that could not afford to appear a day or two later. In fact most of it does. There is a reason it is called snail mail. Cut delivery to 3 days a week. Cut trucks and personal in half, raise bulk rates to to cover costs and there is no reason the USPS cannot break even. Forget the electronic bandaids. They are nothing but attempts to duplicate a service most of us already have. It's called e-mail. The USPS is designed to deliver hard copy information. That is a 20th century need. Technology has moved on and most information is now electronic and the need for much of what the USPS does no longer exists. It is time for the USPS to shrink and eventually die.

Given the fact that political leaders will never step up to the plate in the face of this large labor union, I think we need to get creative on some efficiency solutions. Currently, there is a huge inefficiency in the deliveries of packages by private firms with no good options for consumers to save money by picking the item up in their neighborhood at a reduced price. The private firms have advantages in logistics and cost control but not in footprint and options for consumers to pick their level of service. It's like cable and phone monopolies offering all or nothing choices for service. A partnership between the public and private services with lower-priced service options for neighborhood pickup would help consumers. Otherwise union costs will drive up both public and private costs. Also, if you really want to go green, then slap a cigarette type punitive tax on mailings to force more email use and reform legal acceptance of electronic copies for official purposes.

Whoa! A major single point of failure. If someone hacks into the mail servers, forget about privacy. Why not focus on the productivity of the USPS store workers and back office workers.Try going to the post offices close to noon time. most counter are closed except for 1 or 2. Why are most counters closed during peak hours? Secondly, why is the stamp vending machines retired? Last year, I stop in at a empty USPS office to buy stamps from the machine. The clerk refuses to break the $20 bill and even have the cheek to tell me coins are money too!

What about a hybrid electronic-paper system? A company could transmit digital documents to a local post office, where they could be printed and then delivered. The post office could charge a printing and delivery fee! I donâ??t think the junk mail senders should be allowed to send for $.05/address; if you thought email spam was bad just wait for a digital version of the USPS. Also, in electronic version there is no privacy because the government could easily scan these documents, just like they already do with email and internet traffic (carnivore). Within our current system, we should: 1. Hike the rate for standard mail (junk mail) to a level just below 1st class. 2. Require all postal customers to have a mailbox near the street. There are some places were the mail carrier has to walk up to every house or office. 3. No more paid holidays for the 'lesser' federal holidays. 4. Limit service to rural and remote areas by requiring residents to have a PO BOX and/or fewer delivery days. 5. Eliminate Saturday delivery for commercial addresses and Wednesday delivery for residential addresses.

The USPS needs to down size it's labor force. Buy out older workers and put in cheaper new ones. Their benefits are astronomical!
