I worked fifty hours a week, trained thirty hours a week, and still competed. I was a more disciplined athlete blind than as a collegiat recruited football player coming out of high school.

Richard Doczy Sep 5, 2008 5:09 PM GMT We all have assets and liabilities, through misofrutue or mis conduct, and all this striving to be like the best of those who don't have impediments seems misdirected. Trying to have a disabled person compete with the fully abled seems artificial, more ideologically driven than sensible and helpful. Maybe a few will break through, via extraordinary devotion (preventing much engagement with the rest of one's possibilities), but this seems more a matter of peer pressure than sound policy.

As the new Executive Director of the Athletes with Disabilities HALL OF FAME, I was thrilled to see great coverage. Many of our Hall of Fame alumni are former (or current) Paralympians who struggle for recognition as athletes first. Kudos to Businessweek and the corporations who recognize these athletes.
