Paul Schneider Mar 11, 2010 11:04 PM GMT With all of the obstacles to putting apps "in" the device, it seems to make more sense to move towards a CloudTV model where applications are hosted in the network streamed to any set-top box or broadband-connected device. This is exactly the approach that several major cable system operators have been taking for interactive services, including Cablevision Systems' recent "Olympic Showcase."

Paul Hague Mar 11, 2010 11:38 AM GMT This is because apps in the mobile world work in that it satisfies an immediate and somewhat transient want at low cost. The TV is very different, we have found this at BiBC, we already develop apps, although we call them channels for these devices. The concept of channels works on a TV, apps just don't as they are small value with high delivery costs. Our platform allows BiBC to take payments over the TV as well so we have a realiseable business model in the ' give it away for free' economy

Kerry McGuire Mar 10, 2010 7:40 PM GMT With mobile applications taking hold with consumers through devices like the iphone, palm-pre and a host of Android devices, consumers expect their TVs or any device with a screen to deliver more. The opportunity is big and there are some significant transitions taking place that will help drive the innovation forward. ARM is helping to drive critical mass around the processor technology by bringing the popular mobile processor technology that can run your favorite applications and key web technologies such as Adobe Flash Player 10 to TV chip-sets. This will help reduce the complexity in getting critical software like Yahoo widgets and Adobe Flash 10 supported. In addition, open platforms will be a key driver. Weâ??ve already seen a lot of momentum in bringing the Android platform over to a range of devices from TVs to picture frames using ARM processors. This type of development can drive a new range of applications that run across multiple devices â?? giving consumers an experience that they love. This is a trend we expect to see continue as the innovation from the mobile market continues to take hold in other segments.

J P Mar 10, 2010 3:39 PM GMT The reason why web-connected TV is not working currently is the hardware technology is not there yet. You need fast download speeds. Cisco announced a new router on Tuesday which will help Web TV. But it will take years before Web companies buy and install the new routers. The networks are not ready yet for Web TV. In a few years when the network hardware is in place then Web TV will be possible.

Richard Bullwinkle Mar 9, 2010 10:49 PM GMT Well said. The traditional (giant) CE companies need to awaken to the consumer's constant desire for new apps, and frequent updates to those apps. In the year 4AI (anno iPhone), the age-old philosophy of "if you want next year's features - buy next year's product" is becoming passe, if not offensive. And yes, if the rest of the CE world wants to compete against the seemingly ubiquitous iPhone app (and maybe the Android app if Apple continues to crack down on controlling who gets to publish), then they must collaborate on a platform that allows developers to write apps for many different brands. That said, this is only the dawn of the connected age, and already we have more entertainment choices than we ever dreamed. More entertainment will come, and Info-tainment will follow as well. Thanks for pointing out where we are and where we need to go!-Richard Bullwinkle Rovi Corporation

Dan G Mar 9, 2010 5:28 PM GMT I have the Samsung LED with the Yeahoo apps which I never use for two simple reasons: 1. They are much slower 2. Who uses the TV remote, if you have Cable - the Cable remote is used for everything.

mike s Mar 9, 2010 5:09 PM GMT iPhones are getting pretty universal, but Apple development is converging on a closed system- not the model a developer looking for more eyeball time on a variety of platforms. That leaves Windows and Linux. Windows is still clunky in the TV-as-internet-appliance area. This leaves Linux. You can build a very small PC with not a lot of effort and put a Linux distro just begging to be access via remote control. It's just one plugin away from the TV, and the closest we're likely to have to a do-everything box for TV viewing online. I'd think about developing something slick for Linux that can be remoted controlled, personally.

Sam Beal Mar 9, 2010 2:59 PM GMT one day, standards will emerge (from someone with market clout). The iPhone is a standard platform. ditto Android.
