Nancy Roney Jun 11, 2009 9:36 PM GMT my friend who moved to NC a yr ago sent this comment calling NC a "mirage inthe desert" As for RTP Paul said just last week Money magazine voted it one of the top ten places to live because it has Research Trinagle Park. Well that is great but none of the companies in the park are hiring. It is bad to lead people atray when they might use all their money to come here and find out there is nothing here. That is just wrong. There is this young couple that comes into the store and I would say they are about 30. The guy told me they really want to go back to New York and find this place terrible. He called North Carolina a mirage in the desert.

Reyn Bowman Jun 8, 2009 2:21 PM GMT Mr. Engardio - Thanks for the insight. But I apologize that you were tripped up by the airport name and the location of RTP.Raleigh-Durham is the name of an airport midway between two distinct communities. As many here clarify, there simply is no such place.RTP is based in a special Durham County district, four miles from Downtown and encompassed by the City of Durham. A 25% extention now spills toward the Town of CaryIt is true RTP is near the airport but misapplication of that term as a community has led to the inconvenience of business travelers. That said, references that the Park is between Durham and Raleigh are inaccurate and probably what tripped you up. It is true that this part of Durham can be viewed as midway between Raleigh and Chapel Hill, also Philadelphia and Atlanta.Again, I apologize the geography was made so inscrutable.

Vivek Wadhwa Jun 8, 2009 9:46 AM GMT Pete, what you say is correct. RTP is a magnificent place to grow a business. The area has huge advantages and is a great place to live. I have grown 2 technology companies there. But -- and this is a big BUT -- RTP has simply not lived up to its potential. Technology is not booming there as it could be, there is little seed financing and venture capital available (investors are far too conservative and unsure of themselves), the State lags the nation in immigrant entrepreneurship and is doing little to facilitate the commercialization of research from the top-notch research universities there. RTP has had the potential of rivaling Silicon Valley -- but it is far behind.
