BUMP: Has anyone been able to share an opportunity map example as described in this article? Many thanks, it would be great to see this visual concept visually! :)

This looks like the sort of thing: http://www.businessinnovationfactory.com/nhf/multimedia/opportunity-mapBut there's better (ie more like the ones described in the article) examples here, although it's very heavy-going: http://www.cs.uic.edu/~kzhao/Papers/05_CIKM05_kaidi.pdf

I agree -- itâ??d be fascinating to see an actual example of a map. Seems like this is an extremely effective visual approach to mapping the best route towards innovative growth.

Hi, this is Pete, a colleague of Alonzo's. Thanks for all of your enthusiasm! Unfortunately, we can't directly share an opportunity map with this piece, as all of the ones we've made for clients are highly confidential, even the ones that we did five or six years ago. We are, however, looking at finding a way to share one, which I'll link to in the comments as and if we're able to put it together.

See Chris Zook's book: Growth from the Core, where there is an interesting illustration of what can be described as a 'growth adjacency map' identifying growth opportunities in areas around the firm like new value chain steps, new geographic markets, new channels, new customer segments, new products, and new business units. This form of 'opportunity map' has been a great tool for visualizing growth strategies.
