Anyone interested in FUEL FRUGAL vehicles shoul look for the FORD/MAZDA/VOLVO and GM/CHEVY?VAUXHALL vehicles rated above 51 an 61 mpg(Imperial) [42 and 51 mpg(US)] combined cycle in the UK! Do NOT FORGET to multiply mpg(Imperial) by 0.833 to get mpg(US).http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/fuelConSearch.aspThere are lots of small turbo diesels not at all like anything available from the Det3 domestic vehicles!

Ford? um, I think that's a Mazda2 in Ford bodywork. I think I like the Ford bodywork better.

I bought a brand new VW 2006.5 Jetta diesel in June 2007 knowing that fuel is going up. I get 46mpg highway. Diesels are better because they are clean burning, quiet, NO batteries like Prius, almost the same mpq BUT much much more power and bigger size along with VW safety five star ratings.

The old VW Rabbit diesel long had the mileage record (mpg in the 50's I think).Hybrids are a silly gimmick. Apart from some regenerative breaking, there's nothing gained. All the energy ultimately comes from the gas engine (they're not plug-ins).A dinky car like the Prius would get even better mileage if you throw out the bloated technology and replace it with a diesel engine. Ford's ECOnetic is proof.

Terry Butler:Wow, Americans are truly dumb? Are you an American? That is a blanket statement with which I'm sure a lot of Americans would take issue. (By the way, you spelled truly incorrectly.) Americans buy what is available and what they can afford. Michael Moore is not the standard for ANYTHING. He is the left's darling; so naturally he's anti-American. Don't buy it.

GM gave diesel automobiles a bad name with the junk diesels they tried to pawn off on us. Congress is also to blame for putting the exicse tax on diesel. I have a 1981 VW rabbit with 360,000 miles and still get 50/55 mpg.I also have a 1985 Ford Escort station wagon diesel that gets 48 MPG.If the government would get out of the way and let free enterprise prevail, we all would benefit. Diesel engines get at least 15% better mileage than a gas car. How many barrels a day savings would that amount to for the whole US?

Is this surprising? This is the same company that was caught with its pants down in regards to the fleet they were pushing in the US. They had no alternative to the monstrous gas-guzzlers they flooded the market with, and now they "do not see a market for this vehicle." It's that kind of foresight that got them in the mess they are in. Oh well, others will find the diesel market in the US profitable, and Ford will once again be left behind.

Say, Honda has a diesel Civic that they don't sell in the US either - why? Like the Ford, it won't pass California and New York emissions...oh, but for you conspiracy theory nuts - Karl Rove won't let 'em sell the diesel Civic

This story does not surprise me. My dad was in the service stationed in the UK in 1953-54. He said Ford had a car over there called the Cortina that would get around 50 mpg. He wanted to buy one and have it sent back to the states but they wouldn't let him. There's always some excuse.
