Good. It's time for Google to start earning their money instead of enjoying a free ride driven by hype. To say Google is ridiculously overvalued is a historic understatement. This is an advertising company, and there is no way on earth they deserved a $700 stock price, much less a $70 stock price. I'm glad to see that the wizard behind the curtain is slowly being exposed.

In order for google to survive they need to adapt the advertising scheme to video and get mobile devices to use their tools. A google phone isn't enough. They need maps and video incorporated into every phone. Phones are much more robust and when screwball companies like AT&T figure out their data networks aren't good enough for video phones they will upgrade their backends.Google also needs to stop wasting time and money buying out companies that don't pan out. Users don't and won't create their webpages on google. The software is crippled and worthless. Another example is placing your medical records online outside of HIPAA compliancy. It won't work and doctors will be reluctant to use it.What google should pursue is collaborating with BIOS manufacturers and bypass the windows OS and boot computers hooked up to networks to a google OS. This is not that diffucult to do if you partner up with the BIOS manufacturers and have broadband access.Microsoft underpaid employees have proven that internal strife has nothing to do with the performance of the enterprise .

Google is a one-trick pony. Maybe now people will come out of their sugar-induced comas and see that a company like Microsoft, which has a broad range of products in a wide range of markets and realize that Google simply can't compete in the long run.

The "day a week to work on personal projects" line sounds awfully like my past employer...their's was 10% but you were expected to somehow find 10% of your time (nominally 4 hours) in a schedule that demanded you bill 38 hours per week or risk no bonus pay or worse, losing your job.Good on paper when you are hiring...not so good in reality if managers ignore it and the culture allows it to be ignored...

Former google employees tell the story clearly: the "20% time" is a joke. Very few employees really use it, and those that do laughingly call it "120%" time since it is never the case that they can eschew their daily work for this lofty 20% time work. And that is just the beginning of the farce that is the google culture. The story goes on and on about the rest of the culture being nowhere near what is beautifully marketed outside the company. And yet, the press goes on blindingly believing what the company tells it but never really checks the reality. I suggest you go talk to some of the non-execs who have left, and ask them what they thought of the company -- that will give you a candid view of the inside and a glimpse of what is to come. They are littered throughout the Silicon Valley and elsewhere -- go track them down and talk to them, and get a real view of the company instead of regurgitating the same old story.
