hroush Aug 20, 2011 12:35 PM GMT It's never made sense to me that USPS charges a flat rate for any letter delivered. I always thought it made more sense to at least have an in state rate and out of state rate. It also makes sense to me to cut delivery to 5 or even 4 days a week.

Mike Aug 20, 2011 10:09 AM GMT Its clear that the post office needs to reinvent itself. It will mean fewer post offices, many in rural communities will need to be shut down or have very limited service. The Tea Party idiots gaining control over the government mean that the post office cannot not expect any help from the government. It could use some statutory relief so they could close post offices and develop a private sector model. Right now, they cannot do it. Personally, I'd close all of the post offices in the 60 or so Tea Party Idiot congressional districts first and of course greatly reduce services in Tea Party Backward states like Alabama, Mississippi, etc, so they can suffer first. I would also charge those state for reimbursing federal bailouts of bank closures that have occurred this week. Tea Party Congressional districts and states should get their charity from church bake sales or however they do it in those places. Its sad that a great institution like the USPS must change so radically, but it must be done.

R.F. CRAIG Aug 20, 2011 8:25 AM GMT ALL JUNK MAIL SHOULD BE CHARGED THE FIRST CLASS POSTAGE RATE. MAIL DELIVERY SHOULD BE REDUCED TO 3 DAY PER WEEK. MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO TAKE ON THE UNIONS, AS THEY ARE IN CONTROL OF THE USPS, NOT MANAGEMENT.

Lynnebell Aug 20, 2011 1:07 AM GMT After the anthrax scares the US Postal Service was required, under President Bush, to keep a fund to take care of future terrorism. How much does this fund currently have?I recall that it was billions per year- where is all of that money?

KatieT Aug 19, 2011 10:48 AM GMT USPS needs to not only reinvent itself in the manner of European post offices, it also -- and perhaps more importantly -- needs to get control of it's union employees and require them to give the same level of service as Fedex or UPS. In our area we routinely see USPS being unwilling to step out of their vehicles to deliver a package on a rainy day -- forget about a snowy day -- while the other services deliver in all weathers without issue. Need to go to the Post Office? All of ours now close for at least an hour at lunchtime. And they close at 4:30 pm while somehow Fedex is open until 6:30 pm. USPS and their unions need to grasp the essential fact that they need to compete to survive -- it the nature of life in America. Customers will patronize the providers that meet their needs best and USPS has to grasp that it doesn't have innate right to impose it's service options on the public.

Carl Reiss Aug 19, 2011 8:09 AM GMT The creation of then civil service postal carriers parallels that of religon, a long life of low pay, toil and sweat to hopefully conclude in heaven. Is this a system failure or are following the wrong "Gods" in Congress ?

Gimme Abreak Aug 18, 2011 6:55 PM GMT Easy fix !The biggest users (Junk Mail) pay as little as 14 cents per piece. Reverse this stupid business practice and make the price of mailing the same for everyone. The USPS would soon be making hugh profits.

John Davidson Aug 18, 2011 5:52 PM GMT My solution. USPS handles only 1st Class mail. Sent it all to one sorting facility and then sent it to local offices for delivery. All package mail goes to private carriers like Fedex. All other classes go in plastic bags delivered on Tues and Friday only by newspaper level employees.

Jim Aug 18, 2011 2:08 PM GMT Whenever our incompetent congress is involved in quasi private companies insolvency is the result. Note the USPS, Fanny May, Freddy Mac, Amtrack, etc. Let's just let it fail. Our congress and their partners, the unions, aren't honest enough to come up with a solution. It will be inconvenient for awhile but a better service will arise from the ashes through the private enterprise sector.
