I think the question that facebook is trying to answer is: would you be more willing to buy a product a complete stranger recommended and a close friend disliked, or a product that several strangers disliked but your best friend highly recommended? Whose opinion is more valuable to you as a shopper? Quantity of opinions vs quality of opinions.

i understand why fb is going this route but i don't see companies that sell specialized items that don't hit the general market really getting much benefit form putting stuff up on fb. companies like b2b businesses and more specialized service industries will do better on sites that attract an audience that isn't looking for what their friends are ding on the weekend. i still believe that old school directories are the best route for businesses and my company http://www.7mainstreet.com is a social directory that offers ecommerce store fronts to our business advertisers, so any business can sell their goods and services when the customer hits their profile.

It's an absolutely genius move for a company like Facebook. Yes, they might be evaluated at $50B, BUT that's in a secondary market. They haven't even IPOd!! Facebook has much more in it's sleeve and the leak to the public is slow due to information restrictions imposed by Facebook and what they will roll out in coming year will make their position even stronger. Facebook is build to provide the greatest marketing tool on the planet. It's more than Google, users actually voluntarily chose they'll like and dislikes. It's a genius marketing tool. Facebook is making the next logical step and that is to take advantage of it's 500 million populace. Why wouldn't they? There is only one competitor at this moment to Facebook and that is Google, and Google is loosing considerably quick. Remember, you still opt-in to be on Facebook. It's peoples choice, no one is making you. And no, I don't have a Facebook profile.
